Introduction
Heather Castillo
3D Environmental Prop & Texture Artist
I’ve been creating digital art for games for more than two decades, with a passion for building props and environments that support the worlds players explore. Whether I’m modeling a stylized medieval table, optimizing a low-poly asset for real-time performance, or refining textures to capture the right mood, I enjoy solving the balance between artistic quality and technical efficiency.
Throughout my career I’ve worked across a variety of roles, from leading creative teams and managing large community-driven projects to producing game-ready assets for shipped titles. Most recently, I served as an Artist in Residence Mentor at Gallium Studios, creating stylized assets for Proxi while helping fellow artists improve their modeling, baking, texturing, and production workflows.
Long before that, I founded SimFreaks, one of the largest and longest-running Sims creator communities. What began as a creative hobby grew into a thriving resource where I collaborated with artists around the world, led large content projects, and helped shape an online community that reached thousands of players every day. That experience taught me as much about collaboration and project management as it did about art.
Today my focus is creating clean, efficient assets for games. I enjoy the entire pipeline, from concept refinement and high-to-low poly workflows to UV mapping, PBR texturing, and optimization for modern game engines. Every project is an opportunity to create something that not only looks good, but performs well and fits naturally into the world it’s built for.
When I’m not creating new work, you’ll usually find me exploring new tools and workflows, studying production techniques, or rebuilding and preserving years of creative projects that continue to inspire new ideas.Specializing in environmental art and texturing, my expertise spans industry-standard tools like Maya, Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator, Substance 3D Painter, Unity, and Blender. Years of experience have sharpened both my technical skills and creative approach, with past roles including Art Director at Star Gaming Network alongside Patrick J. Barrett III and owner/creator of SimFreaks.com—ranked #1 for Sims 1 add-ons by Electronic Arts and permanently featured as a top creative content site. Previously, as an Artist in Residence at Gallium Studios, I contributed to an innovative AI-driven game designed by Will Wright. Beyond 3D artistry, my skill set includes HTML, CSS, and Adobe Dreamweaver, along with a foundational understanding of PHP, allowing me to merge artistic vision with technical versatility in every project.
